Piano Nocturne No. 2. While the first piano nocturne was written to reflect the moods of the night, the second captures the feelings I experience when falling asleep. Written roughly in three sections, it transitions from a “peaceful clarity” into a “drifting section” and then finally to an “uncertain dreaming”. The first section with its somewhat cliché melody expresses the awareness and cognizance of a wakeful consciousness. As the piece progresses, the familiarity of the melody begins to fade, and the lethargic feelings that come before sleep begin to show through. The middle section represents the decision to go gradually into sleep. As the piece arrives at its most dreamy sequence, the rhythm is key to following the night's story. The unpredictable nature of the melody and uncertainty of the beats landing where you expect them exemplifies the feelings of being in a deep dream-filled sleep. Notice the trickling-down effect of the chromatic scale over an arpeggiated minor bassline. It is written this way to signify transitioning from being awake into deep, wonderful, delicious, well-deserved sleep.
