Piano Nocturne No. 1
Piano Nocturne No. 1 is the first of what I hope will become an
entire collection of nocturnes. A piano “Nocturne” originates from the French word for nocturnal, meaning of the night. This piece intends to reflect the moods and feelings evoked during the night. As the piece evolves from E major to C# minor, it mirrors the transition from the clarity and awareness of the day to the dreamy, pensive quality of the night. It progresses away from the arpeggiated movements of the left hand and into a grand swell filled with dissonance. This expresses that the night is not always a blissful lullaby of purity, but can also become an uncomfortable, scary place. As the piece resolves itself from its previous, unsettling moment, it reverts to its regular ambiguous nature. Feeling somewhat clear yet somewhat unclear Piano Nocturne No. 1 represents just one of the many characteristics of the night.
